In short, no. To get into learning analytics, all you need to get started is access to data and a willingness to analyze that data. Though xAPI is a preferred data format for Watershed, our platform is equipped with a Data Conversion Engine that gives you access to non-xAPI data sources by providing a flexible, reusable solution.

An important feature of a flexible, xAPI-conformant LAP is its ability to work with any xAPI data, regardless of the identifiers used and the structure of extensions. While an LAP might provide reports designed for specific use cases and types of data, an LAP also needs to be flexible enough to work with the broad mix of learning data that xAPI can support. If your systems do not support xAPI, Watershed provides tried and tested options—such as the Data Conversion Engine, API access, and custom connectors to get your data in.

Yes, Watershed adheres to GDPR. Watershed maintains an active certification with the EU-US Privacy Shield to allow for transfer of personal data from the European Economic Area to the United States. Additionally, Watershed’s infrastructure provides the ability to utilize hosting facilities located within the EU so personal data stays in the EU.

When it comes to data portability, Watershed can push xAPI statement data about a data subject directly to another system that supports xAPI, or this data can be provided via a downloadable file. Watershed also has the ability to add role-based filters and permissions that introduce an extremely granular level of control over what data can and can’t be processed.

If your LMS contains an LRS, it likely only accepts limited data. Our anecdotal understanding from clients is that reporting in LMSs is segmented so that the LRS is separate from the rest of their database. In other words, you can’t be 100% certain that a completion statement stored in the LMS’s LRS from an external content provider will appear in a traditional reporting module.

Currently, there aren’t any major LMSs that contain an LRS that has passed the Department of Defense's conformance test. So while your LMS may have some LRS functionality, we hesitate to say with certainty that it will accept statements sent from Watershed and/or perform in the ways in which you might expect.
